The State Archives is a special state administration institution appointed to: cultivate archival documentation heritage from the area of its competence, protect this documentation, gather, store and share the archival materials, gather not archival materials, issue certified true copies and certificates on the basis of owned archival holdings, publish archival sources and supplies and do research in the field of archive studies.
The State Archives in Kalisz works in three voivodeships:
- Wielkopolskie Voivodeship (the districts of: Jarocin, Kalisz- urban and rural district, Kępno, Krotoszyn – except Kobylin commune, Ostrzeszów and Pleszew)
- Łódź Voivodeship (the district of Wieruszów – except Lututów commune)
- Dolnośląskie Voivodeship: (the districts of: Dziadowa Kłoda, Międzybórz and Syców – from the district of Oleśnica)
